Curly Mares

Kestrel Farms was started in 1993 with the idea of raising quality Warmbloods and ponies for dressage and jumping. Although we continue to breed one pony mare every year, our direction switched from Warmbloods to American Bashkir Curlies in 2001.

Why Curlies? In December, 2000 I purchased two Bashkir Curlies as a novelty from Al-Marah Arabians in Tucson, Arizona. Both of these horses had very limited contact with people, so I was amazed by their affectionate, trusting nature and intelligence.
I had read about the "puppy dog" personality of Curlies, but didn't think they could really be any different from other breeds.
I soon found out that Curlies are highly addictive and I had caught the bug!

In searching for our breeding stock, I choose horses that have excellent dispositions, tough hooves, superior conformation and
beautiful movement.

Although there are several different organizations that register Curly horses, Kestrel Farms is a member of the ABCR and the ECBA, both dedicated to preserving the American Bashkir Curly horse. In the days in which these curly coated horses were first discovered, they were rare and out crossing was necessary to eliminate inbreeding. Today, the ABCR and ECBA feel there are enough horses in the gene pool to only breed curly to curly.
